Kancheepuram: In a shift in his stand, DMDK chief Vijaykant has expressed his willingness to lead an alliance excluding the ruling DMK and opposition AIADMK in the Tamil Nadu Assembly polls next year.
"People have lost confidence in both the DMK and AIADMK, which have ruled the state alternately in the last over five decades. They prefer a change. We will be able to fulfil their expectations," he told his party cadres at Mamandur near here. It is the first time since founding the party in 2005 that the actor-turned politician has indicated his willingness to forge an alliance to contest elections.
Desiya Murpokku Dravida Kazhagam (DMDK) has played spoilsport to both principal Dravidian parties DMK and AIADMK, cutting into their vote banks in the last assembly and Lok Sabha polls -- though Vijaykant alone managed to emerge success by winning the Vridhachalam assembly segment in 2006.

But, the 'Captain', as Vijaykant is known, made it clear that he wants to lead from the front.
"There will be an alliance led by DMDK for the assembly elections," he said yesterday after inaugurating a community hall. The details of the alliance would be worked out at the outset of the election.
Vijaykant said his party believed in 'forgive and forget' principle, and this would be the spirit in which the new alliance would be formed. His remarks assume significance as PMK leader S Ramadoss, a vocal critic of Vijaykant, has recently said he was not averse to a tie-up with the DMDK.
Vijaykant dismissed the free pump-set scheme announced by Chief Minister M Karunanidhi recently as a "vote catching gimmick", saying these can be of no use to farmers who were facing power cuts.
